By the introduction of Enbrel in RA market in 1998, a need to fight for insurance approvals and prior authorizations was a top priority. Being located at the heart of the biggest Rheumatology clinics in Los Angeles, RX Biotech Specialty Pharmacy felt the need to assist practitioners and patients to simplify the process of dispensing Enbrel.
The first Rheumatology Referral Form created for Enbrel circulated in hundreds of Rheumatology offices in Southern California. An accreditation in Rheumatology in 1999 paved the way for our clinicians to become advanced in the Rheumatology, Dermatology and Gastroenterology field and to be able to address such patients in need. At this time the focus was not just assisting the physicians in the prior authorization process, but also to implement a quality control program to increase patient compliance and adherence to the therapy, as well as patient education on how to store and administer the medications and to remind the patients the importance of their follow up visits with their physicians.
In 2003, when Humira by Abbott entered the market, again RX Biotech was the main focus to process those prescriptions. Then it came Forteo by Eli Lily, Remicade (Centocor), Rituxan (Genentech), Orencia (BM), etc., RX Biotech felt the need to enter in other markets than Rheumatology such as Dermatology, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Neurology, Oncology, Osteoporosis, HIV, etc.
RX Biotech Specialty Pharmacy regards itself as clinicians, first and foremost. Participation in various research projects such as phase three studies: Infliximab to treat moderate to severe RA, Abatacept to treat RA, and phase two studies on Medimmune drug to treat cutaneous SLE and more.
The highlight of RX Biotech clinical work was published in November 2011 issue of Rheumatism and Arthritis journal, an official publishing of the Academy of College of Rheumatology under “ Trends in Prescribing Biologics in California.” It compared various biologics to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis between the years 2008, 2009, and 2010.
